Yom Kippur Forgiveness That Heals

A wealthy mobster had an accountant who was the only one who knew where millions were hidden. But the man was deaf. One day, the boss needed the money, brought in a sign-language interpreter, and demanded, “Where’s my money?”
The accountant signed: “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
The boss pulled out a gun. “Tell him I’ll blow his brains out if he doesn’t talk!”
The interpreter signed the threat. The accountant panicked and signed: “The money is buried in the backyard, under the rose bush.”
The boss barked: “What did he say?”
The interpreter shrugged: “He said you don’t have the guts to pull the trigger.”

Funny — but it points to a truth: sometimes we need an interpreter to translate life’s most important messages. Yom Kippur is that interpreter. It takes the confusion of life — the grudges, the guilt, the things left unsaid — and translates them into one simple word: forgive.

Simon Wiesenthal’s Dilemma

Simon Wiesenthal, the Nazi hunter, once sat by the bedside of a dying SS officer. The man begged him: “I murdered Jews. Before I die, I need a Jew to forgive me.”
Wiesenthal walked out in silence. Later, he asked: Did I do right? Thirty-two leading rabbis, priests, and scholars answered — and they disagreed. Some said: You cannot forgive others. Some said: compassion demands it.

This is the heart of Yom Kippur: Who do we forgive? What does forgiveness really mean?

Joseph’s Tears

The Torah gives us a model. When Joseph’s brothers feared revenge after Jacob’s death, they begged for mercy. Joseph cried and said:
“You intended to harm me, but G-d intended it for good.”
Joseph teaches: forgiveness doesn’t deny the hurt, but it sees a bigger story.

The Student Who Forgave Himself

A Stanford professor once asked her students to write about a time they forgave someone — or themselves. A young man shared, “I was addicted. I lied to my parents, stole from my sister, and hurt everyone who loved me.

 In recovery, the hardest step wasn’t making amends. It was forgiving myself. The day I did, I finally felt free.”

Yom Kippur is not only about forgiving others. It’s about forgiving ourselves — letting go of shame so we can begin again.

Walther Rathenau’s Assassin

In 1922, Germany’s foreign minister, Walther Rathenau, was assassinated by extremists. One of them, Erwin Kern, was later visited in prison by Rathenau’s mother. She told him, “I forgive you. The hatred must end with me.”
Her forgiveness shocked the nation. She turned her private pain into a public act of healing.

The Choice Today

So what is forgiveness? It is not forgetting. It is not excusing evil. It refuses to let bitterness chain us to the past.

Sometimes we forgive like Joseph — because we see G-d’s hand in it.
Sometimes, like the student, we must forgive ourselves.
Sometimes, like Rathenau’s mother, we choose to stop the cycle of hate.

Yom Kippur is the day G-d Himself promises: “I have forgiven.” If the King of Kings can forgive us, how can we not forgive each other — and ourselves?

The Interpreter’s Gift

We began with the story of the deaf accountant. He couldn’t hear the words — and so the message was lost. Yom Kippur is G-d’s interpreter. 

It translates the noise of our guilt, pain, and grudges into a simple, healing call: Forgive. Be forgiven. Begin again.

When we walk out of shul after Yom Kippur, we should feel lighter. Not because life is easy, but because forgiveness gives us wings.
