A teacher once told new immigrants that to speak English, they only needed three phrases:
“Wow.” “Oh, really?” “Big deal.”
A humorous reminder that words matter — but some words matter far more than others.
This week's Torah portion, Lech Lecha, begins the story of our people. G-d commands Abraham to leave everything familiar, and promises him something extraordinary:
“I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and all the families of the earth will be blessed through you.”
These are not poetic words — they are a blueprint for Jewish destiny.
Why the Strange Order?
The verse is written in a curious structure:
- Blessing: “I will bless those who bless you”
- Curse: “Those who curse you, I will curse”
Why not simply say both in the same format?
Our sages explain:
When someone thinks of blessing a Jew, G-d blesses them first, even before they speak.
But one who thinks of cursing a Jew is not punished until they act.
Why?
Because goodness is natural to the Jewish soul, a thought to bless reflects who we truly are. Negative impulses are foreign to our essence; they don’t “count” unless acted upon.
To think well of another Jew is already holy.
And G-d rewards holiness immediately.
A Second Explanation — Human Nature
The Vilna Gaon adds something brilliant — and humorous:
- A happy, blessed person gives generous blessings.
- A bitter person gives stingy blessings — but powerful curses.
So G-d blesses those who bless us first, to fill them with blessing so that their blessing to us will be full.
And the one who curses? He is only cursed after — so that when he curses, his curse has no power.
G-d stacks the deck in favor of blessing.
A Promise Proven Across Civilizations
If a person invented the Torah, they would never include such a bold prediction — because history could easily prove it false.
And yet 3,700 years later:
- Abraham is revered by Judaism, Christianity, and Islam — over half of humanity.
- Nations that welcomed Jews flourished.
- Nations that persecuted Jews collapsed morally, culturally, or politically.
Spain expelled its Jews — and fell from world power.
Germany, the cultural capital of Europe, destroyed its own soul.
Countries that nurture Jewish life lead in freedom, innovation, and blessing.
Where Jews can live in dignity, society thrives.
Where Jews are hated, freedom and morality decay.
The Canary in the Coal Mine
Jews are history’s early-warning system.
Before evil reaches the world, it first targets us.
The world ignored Jewish suffering before the Holocaust — and suffered the consequences.
The world dismissed Jewish terror victims before 9/11 — and learned the hard way.
When a society turns against Jews, darkness is coming for everyone.
The Message for Us Today
The Torah’s promise is not only about nations — it’s about us, every day.
Do you want a blessing in your life?
- Think blessing
- Wish blessing
- Speak blessing
- Give blessing
Even the desire to bless another Jew brings divine blessing immediately.
And when a Jew curses? We pray they discover light instead.
As G-d told Abraham: I will “a'or” — enlighten — those who curse you.
Because hatred comes from blindness, and once truth is seen, hearts change.
Our Mission
In a world filled with confusion and rising hatred, our task is not only to defend ourselves — but to shine light, elevate one another, and strengthen our unity.
When we uplift another Jew — G-d uplifts us.
When we bless, blessings multiply.
And when we stand proud and united — we bring honor to Abraham’s legacy and healing to the world.
Bless a fellow Jew — even in your heart.
And Heaven will bless you first.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Yoseph Geisinsky
