Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that a UN interpreter caught by an open microphone expressing bewilderment at a slew of resolutions condemning Israel was “brave”, and offered her a job in Israel were she to be dismissed from her position at the UN. “I hope nothing happens to the interpreter, but at any rate, a place of employment is guaranteed for her in Israel if there is a development in that direction,” Netanyahu said. Unaware of the open mic, the interpreter broadcast her opinion to everyone at a General Assembly session last week. “I mean, I think when you have five statements — not five — like a total of 10 resolutions on Israel and Palestine, there’s gotta be something, c’est un peu trop, non? [It’s a bit much, no?] I mean, I know there’s other really bad shit happening, but no one says anything about the other stuff,” she said. Many of the delegates laughed, and the interpreter later apologized. According to a statement from his office, Netanyahu showed a video of the incident to his Cabinet, explaining: “There are moments that tear the hypocrisy off the unending attacks against us and this brave interpreter did so.” |
